Ridiculously violent grindhouse-style movie isn't for kids.

what parents need to know

Parents need to know that this gratuitous, over-the-top 3-D action/adventure movie starring Nicolas Cage is packed with grindhouse-style violence, as well as intense/graphic sexual situations, nudity, and language -- all of which is ratcheted up by the 3-D presentation. Things get even iffier when you consider that the "hero" is an escapee from Hell, there's violence against women, and the movie has mages of an infant in danger. In other words? Not for kids!

what families can talk about

  • Families can talk about the movie's extreme violence. How do you think the filmmakers hope audiences will react to it? Why do you think that?
  • How does the movie portray women? Piper seems to be a strong, self-sufficient character, but what is the movie's attitude toward her? Toward other women? Are there stereotypes here?
  • The movie has several sexual situations and images of nudity. Are they gratuitous or essential to the movie's plot and/or mood?

A pulp B-Grade revenge actioneer with C-Grade execution, 'Drive Angry' is a hallmark of poor film techniques working in unison, inside of a genre that relishes bad filmmaking. Overacting, emotional complacency, forceful plot elements, laughable dialogue, bad effects - it's all on display. In the grindhouse formula - bad = good. In the case of 'Drive Angry', it's just bad.

This over-the-top thrill ride had me laughing on the edge of my seat. I was entertained much more than what I had anticipated myself for and that being said, Drive Angry may just be one of those films that I adore, but everyone hates. Nicholas Cage is pretty quirky in this film and I would say that it would annoy me, but William Fichtner's role is so gut-splittingly hilarious that it saves the film from any god-awfully recognizable performances. The effects are extremely cheesy, the story is wooden, and the acting is so far over-the-top that I just had a smile on my face throughout the entire film. The gore, the brutality, and the funny script is really what keeps this films engine revving on all cylinders. I had a great time during my viewing of this Grindhouse wannabee, and I can see myself revisiting it a few times over again just to get a good laugh along with my action fix. Everything about this movie is stupid, but I love it for just that reason. This film is a pure adrenaline ride!
