Unhealthy relationship is focus of darkly funny adult drama.

what parents need to know

Parents need to know that this darkly comedic drama is not meant for kids. Director Noah Baumbach, as in his other films, stakes his film firmly in messy, sometimes caustic, emotional terrain -- one character has just been discharged from a mental hospital, another gets an abortion -- that may be too mature for most teens. The film's protagonist (Ben Stiller) is a malcontent who rails against injustices small and large -- especially small. Swearing (everything from "asshole" to "dick" to "f--k") and insults are part of his usual patter. His love interest endures continuous emotional battering, and comes back for more. There's also a fairly graphic oral sex scene, and a scene where an adult does cocaine with college students.

what families can talk about

  • Families can talk about Roger: Why is he the way he is and what does he gain by being that grumpy? What are the costs?
  • What attracts Roger and Florence to each other? Is it a believable coupling? Is it healthy? Is it typical of Hollywood movies?

Top Critic Reviews

Fresh: The funniest and saddest movie Mr. Baumbach has made so far, and also the riskiest.

- A.O. Scott, New York Times, Friday, March 19, 2010

Fresh: Roger Greenberg is not the kind of guy you want to wind up next to at a dinner party.

- Alice Tynan, Concrete Playground, Tuesday, July 27, 2010

Fresh: The movie has the easy, unforced feel of the temporary timeout in life that Roger himself has embarked on. The script is full of funny, observant lines.

- Ann Hornaday, Washington Post, Friday, March 26, 2010

Okay movie with one of the most abrupt endings (though it makes sense, I didn't expect it to end when it did). It's understandable why some people are giving it a low rating. It's definitely not everyone's cup of tea. I found it interesting for a while, but after a while, it got repetitive & eventually a drag. I didn't enjoy it enough to recommend it to anyone. Ben Stiller amazingly plays the protagonist who is not a very likable character & is not an anti-hero either (surely, all won't be able to identify with him. I was able to relate to the character a bit, though). Greta Gerwig is so-so, but Rhys Ifans was the best one.

I was stunned to see how poorly this is rating. I totally enjoyed this movie from start to finish! It was so refreshing to see Ben Stiller play something other than an idiot of some kind, and do it convincingly. Though not the most likeable of characters, all the way through, you could understand that he had issues, and this was affecting his behaviour. I still found him quite sympathetic, and Greta Gerwig, an actress I have not seen before, but hope to see more of, was lovely as the also mixed up girl he becomes involved with. Both their characters were so real and I found this just so relatable and well done. I also liked how they handled a few big issues as very matter of fact, not making a big deal of them, and not putting a typical sugary Hollywood solution to them to sugarcoat. These characters are what they are, and this would have to be one of my movies of the year! Excellent.
