An action-packed but too-long flick for kids 12+.

what parents need to know

Parents need to know that this movie contains a LOT of peril and action-violence. Characters are shot at, chased, dragged, trampled, rolled down hills, and nearly roasted over an open fire. In one disturbing scene, Will is tied to a mast and flogged by Bootstrap Bill. Also, the grotesque pirates and CGI sea creatures are menacing and downright scary. And there's lots and lots of rum (yes, we're talking about pirates, but the audience won't be able to buy the stuff for a decade...) But depending on the maturity of your kids, this movie is okay for kids 12 and up.

what families can talk about

  • Families can talk about how far people should go in the name of friendship. Is Jack justified in dragging Will and Elizabeth into his adventure? What could he have done differently to protect his friends?

movie reviews from Rotten Tomatoes®

Top Critic Reviews

Rotten: Although there are memorable bits and pieces, the new Pirates of the Caribbean is a movie with no particular interest in coherence, economy or feeling.

- A.O. Scott, New York Times, Thursday, July 6, 2006

Rotten: The new plot has all the appeal of a seaweed sandwich, being dark, salty, and indigestible.

- Anthony Lane, New Yorker, Monday, July 17, 2006

Rotten: A bustling sequel that outperforms its predecessor as a special-effects extravaganza but one that can't match the feeling of discovery that came with the original.

- Bill Muller, Arizona Republic, Thursday, July 6, 2006

Seriously dislike this installment. Worst pirates movie (I don't like any of them that much anyway).

A fun ride like its predecessor setting up what should be a fun finale. Depp, Bloom, and Knightly shine. Good supporting cast as well.
