Tedious slasher flick is both gory and boring.

what parents need to know

Parents need to know that this violent (yet curiously dull) slasher-style teen horror film -- which is a loose remake of the identically named 1980 Jamie Lee Curtis movie -- includes a constant stream of stabbings, stranglings, and other murders, all of which are committed without craft, tension, or any subtlety whatsoever. It's just a string of killings and gory bloodshed. There's also some discussion of sex and sexuality, references to underage drinking, and strong language ("s--t").

what families can talk about

  • Families can talk about the appeal of horror films. How would you describe the experience of watching them? Why do they so often put young women in peril? Families can also discuss the difference between shock and suspense and the difference between violence and tension. Main character Donna is dealing with a clear case of post-traumatic stress syndrome; families can talk about trying to recover from tragedy and violence.

Top Critic Reviews

Rotten: PROM NIGHT is a must avoid and is the real reason why studios don't screen certain movies for critics.

- Austin Kennedy, Sin Magazine, Thursday, June 24, 2010

Rotten: There's nothing scary in there, but here's a shudder-inducing fact: McCormick and Cardone are currently collaborating on a remake of the witty and nearly perfect 1987 thriller, The Stepfather.

- Chuck Wilson, L.A. Weekly, Monday, April 14, 2008

Rotten: There's no need to wear a corsage to Prom Night. And leaving your higher brain functions at home might be a good idea, too.

It was an okey movie, decent enough when you have nothing else to do, it keeps you not bored. Donna's senior prom is supposed to be the best night of her life. After surviving a horrible tragedy, she has finally moved on and is enjoying her last year of high school. Surrounded by her best friends, she should be safe from the horrors of her past. But when the night turns deadly, there is only one person who could be responsible--a man she thought was gone forever. Now, Donna and her friends must find a way to escape the sadistic rampage of an obsessed killer, and survive a night "to die for."

Quite scary and not that bad of a film!

This movie may seem to be interesting when you hear about it, but when you watch it, it is so predictable. Since Donna's insane teacher is trying to get to her. So you know that all Donna's friends and even her boyfriend are going to die. This movie is cliche and also very predicable. If you want to see an unoriginal remake, rent this movie. But now having rewatched it I guess it's alright but not the best movie.
