Fresh: Some hippie-dippiness dates the picture, but the vrit posturing of Lean's peers looks a lot kitschier in retrospect
- Bill Chambers, Film Freak Central, Thursday, June 24, 2010
Fresh: It's insanely overproduced in Lean's standard epic style, yet somehow the crazy mismatches in scale contribute to the film's sense of romantic delirium.
- Dave Kehr, Chicago Reader, Saturday, January 1, 2000
Fresh: Those who were jealous of Lean's] previous successes decried the film as an utter failure, though of course it is not, it just isn't quite as good as his other movies.
- Douglas Pratt, Hollywood Reporter, Wednesday, March 8, 2006
I was extremely bored with this story. I don't remember any of the plot developments as described in the plot description. I've liked Lean's films, but the performances and story in this one just didn't grab a hold.

A rare misfire from a master. RYAN'S DAUGHTER, arguably David Lean's weakest film, is a self-indulgent mess; shot wonderfully but weak story and character wise. It tested my patience due to it's overlength (the version I saw was 206 minutes, but the theatrical version isn't much shorter), and after a while it was hard to care about what was going on. But did I mention the gorgeous cinematography?
