Impressive effects, but mixed messages about women.

what parents need to know

Parents need to know that this comic book-like fantasy from the director of 300 has disturbing scenes that show men taking advantage of women ... whose sole purpose is to entertain the men. The main female characters are clad in skimpy clothing for much of the movie, too, which seems hypocritical, given that the film is about how a band of oppressed girls take back their power -- the movie ends up reinforcing some of the stereotypes it's theoretically out to bust. Though the fight scenes are often cartoonish in nature, they're unrelenting and brutal, including shoot-outs, swordfights, stabbings, beheadings, and the threat of sexual assault. There's some swearing ("s--t"), too.

what families can talk about

  • Families can talk about how the movie portrays women. Do you think it reinforces stereotypes or undermines them? Who are the most powerful characters in the movie?
  • How do details like the characters' costumes and names affect how you feel about them? Which characters in the movie can be seen as role models?
  • What impact does the movie's violence have? Would it be different if it was more realistic instead of cartoonish? Why?

Director/writer Zack Snyder has created entertaining and visually spectacular ride with Sucker Punch. This is by far his most ambitious film to date and his best too. With outstanding action set-pieces and style Snyder proves that he is one of the best directors of action today. His compositions are breathtaking and his style completely one of a kind. Snyder has always been a interesting director in my books. His range goes from horror (Dawn of the Dead) to swords and sandals (300) and from there to animation with underrated Legend of Ga'Hoole and superhero adaptation in the form of Watchmen. Only Ga'hoole and Watchmen has showed some potential of his before, but Sucker Punch is something truly unique. Here Snyder has created a world of his own and what a world it is. He takes us with ride into the subconscious and boils one hell of a mindfuck actioner. Sure you could blame this being style over substance but Snyder is not even trying to make it anything else but a glorious looking entertainment and i gotta admit that he succeeds in his mission brilliantly. With glorious soundtrack by Marius De Vries & Tyler Bates and breathtaking cinematography by Larry Fong, this is just pure visual feast for eyes. Credit must give to superb fight choreography from Damon Caro and innovative production design by Rick Carter. So many of todays action films are without originality, but Sucker Punch creates something completely of it's own. I have never seen something like this. Zack Snyder has made one of the best action-films of the past years. Sucker Punch is quite a experience to sit through and i kinda like it a lot.

Trash! How can you strip dance to a land of dragons and robots...it just doesn't work like that!! The acting is lame and the only appeal was Snyder's slow mo hd camera shots. I would probably screen this at a loud party where this film is playing in the corner of the room. Its honestly garbage and coming from the director of Watchmen and Dawn of The Dead just makes this film more a tragedy thinking about it.
