Scary '80s vamp film. Older teens only.

what parents need to know

Parents need to know that this movie isn't suitable for kids. While not constant, there are some graphic gory moments. One is a vampire feeding frenzy and the other is the climactic scene where the brothers defend themselves and their friends from attacking vampires. Killing of innocents are mostly implied. One notable scene features a hallucination of maggots and rice.

what families can talk about

  • Families can talk about peer pressure. Why did Michael go along with the pack? Even though he later regrets it, what could he have done (if anything) to keep himself from falling into their trap?

Top Critic Reviews

Fresh: It laughs at the form it embraces, adds a rock-and-roll soundtrack and, if you share its serious-satiric attitude, manages to be very funny.

Rotten: Schumacher`s sputtering, short-term approach to the material is a disappointment, because there's something in it that ought to make for a good movie, and from time to time makes The Lost Boys good enough.

Oh, it's shitty, but inexplicably impossible to hate. Maybe I'm not as inoculated from the 80s as I thought I was. It's difficult to spite a movie for such unrestrained joie de vivre, even if the action is ropey, the ending lame and the characters grating. I dunno, what is there to say of much substance about the fucking Lost Boys? It's a total product of the zeitgeist, sure, but it's at least more imaginative than all the fucking superhero movies we get now. Given the choice between the two, I'd much rather sit through campy crap than reboot after reboot.

If you disagree with the 1 1/2 stars then you have not seen this Joel Schumacher feast recently. I am very angry at my younger self for loving this.

there's not much here to curdle the blood but a thinly disguised tale of teenage angst and "fitting in with the gang" ... only "the gang" happens to live forever ... "only you must FEED!" what's a mom to do when her fav teen is staying out later and later and not talking about where he's been? and what about those hooligans he's hanging with?!? comic relief is supplied by our misunderstood teen's younger brother's clumsy, right wing, tea partying buddies. that, a cool soundtrack, lots of classy overhead shots and of course, jami gertz, keep things interesting.
